The idea of 13th Bella Skyway Festival

The idea of 13th Bella Skyway Festival is Event Horizon.

You just need to look further than your eyes can see.
Then it may happen that the invisible becomes visible.

– Rafael Ábalos

In pre-pandemic times, our freedom of action allowed us to literally touch the horizon, overcome barriers and experience something new every day. The closing period caused many changes in our possibilities, ourselves and the space around us, but also caused that we opened our eyes to many things and began to perceive them in a new, unprecedented way. We are more aware that everything that happens around us is the result of events that we may or may not prevent. Inevitable changes take place and will take place both in human relations and in the natural environment. Just as, on the event horizon, everything that passes through it is lost at the same time, so also pandemics and climate change are forgotten when we don’t think about them. However, what will happen when we cross the border beyond which there will be no more essentials for life? Can we find ourselves in the new reality? Has our perception of the world changed so that we are ready to act? Are we open to new opportunities? The event horizon will be an opportunity to exceed the current limits, both for artists and the audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when does the festival take place?

The festival is organized in Toruń, the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, a city with a rich history and tradition. It is a city whose Old Town complex has been adeed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Toruń is also a city with a whole range of cultural attractions and events such as the Street Theater Festival or the Bella Skyway Festival.

This year, the International Bella Skyway Festival of Light will take place from 16 to 20 August 2022, every day from 20:30 – 00:00.

Last year, during the five festival days, we presented 12 installations, 4 multimedia screenings and 2 special events, which were seen by a total of over 400,000 viewers – both from Poland and abroad.

What is the festival area?

Bella Skyway Festival takes place in the heart of the city, in the Toruń Old Town complex and its immediate vicinity. The event is inextricably linked with the Gothic architecture of Toruń and emphasizes its beauty every year. This year, due to the pandemic restrictions still in force, the festival will be held in the form of closed zones. When submitting a work, the artists may choose the preferred zone in which, in their opinion, the submitted installation would present the best. Toruńska Agenda Culturalna stipulates, however, that for organizational reasons, the zones may be moved or liquidated, and the installation may be organized in a different space.

Is the festival an outdoor event?

The Bella Skyway Festival is mainly an open and outdoor event. It assumes the presentation of the installation and projection in the open air.

Can artist or group submit more than one project?

Yes, an artist or group can submit more than one project, but each project should be sent as a separate submission.

Can I choose the installation location as an artist? Is there a list of locations for installations?

This year, the organizers have proposed 6 zones, within which artists have the right to submit a site-specific installation, i.e. an installation designed within a location of their choice. The organizers, however, reserve the right to propose a change of location. The locations are marked on the overview map above.

What is the budget for a single installation?

The amount of money foreseen for individual installations depends on the project itself. In the application, the artist proposes budget solutions (cost of installation, fee, accommodation, etc.).

Where and when can I submit my proposition?

Artists may submit their projects as part of the recruitment process only via the electronic form located on the website: https://www.tak.torun.pl/open_call/en/

Proposals can be submitted at the latest by 14 March 2022.

I can’t send attachments – what to do now?

In case of technical problems with the form, please contact the 13th Bella Skyway Festival Coordinator – Patryk Dobrzyniecki at the e-mail address: p.dobrzyniecki@tak.torun.pl or by phone on +48 662 072 845.

How are installation proposals and projections selected?

After the recruitment, all of the works are evaluated by the Consultative Council of the 12th Bella Skyway Festival. Each application is evaluated in terms of the adequacy of the application, the idea, the artistic level, as well as the relevance to the theme of 13th Bella Skyway Festival.

If my project is chosen, what happens next?

The organizers will contact the artists of selected proposition within few weeks after end of the Open Call via e-mail. In the next weeks we will discuss the process of participation in the festival and related formal steps.
