The cells of the monks

Nowadays it is difficult to define the exact purpose of these rooms. The assumption that these were quarters for half-brothers or servants stems from the custom of placing such rooms on the ground floors of castles. The servant brothers were usually not of very noble birth, and in the Order they served as lower commanders. Half-brothers were sometimes referred to as mercenaries and servants of the Order. Teutonic Knights of a higher status lived on the upper floors. Near the west gate and today’s entrance to the castle, a guardhouse could also be located in two rooms.
