Last Defense Tower

Towers of this type were referred to by the German word Bergfried. They were free-standing fortresses on a circular, square or polygonal plan in the form of a tower up to 50 meters high, with wide walls. These types of towers were not inhabited on a daily basis. Apart from the defensive function, they also played an important symbolic role. They emphasized the theocratic authority of the Order in Prussia and indicated the nature of the Order State as the Kingdom of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the tower of the Torun castle, both the Polish (also known as the gothic) theme used in the face of the wall and the decoration of the tower with green glazed brick allowed to determine the time of its creation at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

To this day, it is not known what height the tower was. You could probably enter it only from a high defensive porch, and there were spiral stairs in the thickness of its walls.
